Pawnee was bred to produce large pecans, 56 nuts/lb., very early in the season, making this a profitable selection. This pecan tree variety has been tested in Oklahoma and Kansas, and was shown to do well in the cold.
Pawnee is extremely tolerant to winter freezes and retains its leaves until late autumn. The tree structure is more upright and narrow than most pecan varieties creating a striking form in the landscape.
The Pawnee is the only pecan tree known to have significant resistance to yellow aphids.
The large, elliptical nut has a medium thick shell that can easily be extracted. The light golden kernel is nicely filled at 45%. The pecans from Pawnee mature in late September. Cross-pollinate with a Type II tree such as the Forkert, Stuart or Sumner.
