Desirable originated in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and was introduced in 1930. It is a tree that develops quickly and in as little as six years can consistently yield a moderate production of excellent quality pecans.
Part of the reason that nut quality stays so high with the Desirable is that it experiences a self-thinning drop of pecans to avoid overcrowding. Self-thinning also helps to overcome alternate bearing another quality that makes Desirable among the most recommended varieties in the Southeast.
Weighing in at almost 10 grams per pecan, and with only 48 nuts per pound, the size of the pecan is enormous.
After easily cracking the rough shell, you will find a well developed 51% kernel that is light golden in color. Cross-pollinate with a Type II variety such as the Kiowa or Stuart.
More information about planting and growing pecan trees is available from Bass. See below to get the latest edition of our Planting Guide and visit our Blog.

Note: Trees can not be shipped to Arizona, California and Oregon. We prune trees before shipping.
