Oconee was bred for its desirable characteristics such as high quality kernels, disease resistance, and its most important quality, large nut size, combined with a thin, easily cracked shell. It was introduced on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
With only 48 pecans per pound and 53% kernel, these large morsels ripen and fall early to tempt the wildlife.
With an excellent pecan harvest in as little as five years, this highly precocious variety will be a profitable addition to any orchard.
The Oconee is gaining popularity and replacing many older varieties due to, in part its resistance to pecan scab. Cross-pollinate with a Type II variety such as the Forker or Kiowa.
More information about planting and growing pecans is available from Bass. See below to get the latest edition of our Planting Guide and visit our Blog.
