Hewes Crabapple

Hewes Crabapple is a cross between a North American native crabapple and an unknown European variety. It first appeared in Virginia early in the 18th century. It was grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. Historically, Hewes was used in cider. Fruit is about 1.5" in diameter. The skin is green, usually covered by a dull or purplish red blush. Flesh is firm and acid astringent. Great crabapple for wildlife.
